WHO WE ARE
The Lucky 13 Foundation was founded in 2007 by Chris Guilfoil who was originally diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and has been battling cancer since late 1999. Our goal is to encourage people to register as stem cell donors through education and promotion and to make people aware of the simplicity of stem cell collection and the donor process. We hope to improve the lives of the many people suffering from a wide range of diseases and conditions who would benefit from the use of stem cell therapy. Every new registration is a victory.
WHAT WE DO
Medical researchers believe that stem cell therapy has the potential to dramatically change the treatment of human disease. However, there still exists a great deal of social and scientific uncertainty surrounding stem cell research, which could possibly be overcome through public debate, research and education. A number of diseases and conditions that can be treated with stem cell therapy include, but are not limited to;
Certain Cancers Diabetes Parkinson’s Disease Huntington’s Disease Multiple Sclerosis Spinal Cord Injuries
Approximately 30% of the people needing a stem cell transplant will find a match in his or her family. The remaining 70% rely on volunteer donors. The Lucky 13 Foundation sponsors, and helps to facilitate, Stem Cell drives in an effort to increase the amount of stem cell donors with the hopes of finding a match for someone in need. A simple cheek swab and basic registration is all that is needed to register as a donor. If matched, the process of donating stem cells is a simple outpatient procedure.
